Adventures in Optics at Home:

This site accompanies the workshop: Adventures in Optics at Home: A Chapter in the Narrative of Science, the Science of Narrative, and Narrative for Social Justice.

Frank Wattenberg, United States Military Academy (Emeritus)

Abstract

Science is an engaging saga – a quest spanning centuries, pitting heroes against the unknown. This chapter of the narrative of science starts at home, confronting surprises in make-up mirrors and washbasins. We will achieve a temporary toehold on understanding and make major advances only to have our understanding completely upset by new observations. This approach goes beyond narrative, involving students in unscripted adventures in science and the arts. As they do in electronic games, students will build their skills as they go on a series of quests.   We use the science of optics and imagery to tell our narratives and we leverage the creative promise of programming and the emergent synergistic reality between our physical world and our digital world. This workshop will help our students develop their abilities to use science and science-powered narrative to advocate for social justice. It is a combination of grand ambition and home- or classroom-ready units focusing on optics and visual narrative and adventure, requiring nothing more than everyday objects, the cameras in smartphones and at times a bit of coding.
